About
MY BACKGROUND
My name is Andrea Reis Gomes/Andrea Evans. I have been teaching English as a Second Language since 1993. I started as an EFL student in Brazil, fell in love with the language, and became a teacher. I love what I do. I’m a team player, fun to be around and easy to get along with. I enjoy meeting new people, traveling and being exposed to different cultures.
At present, I teach EAP (English for Academic Purposes) at Barry University in Miami, USA. I teach international students whose aim is to attend an American university. We teach them conversational English in the morning and academic reading and writing in the afternoons. It is a very intensive course. Our students are required to learn how to write a five-paragraph essay and to successfully complete a research paper. I teach grammar structure, listening, speaking, reading, and writing from levels 101 - 109 until the Master's class which includes levels 110 - 112. It is extremely satisfactory to see when a student starts with us in level 101 and can barely say a few words in English, and a year later, they are prepared to take the TOEFL exam and attend an American university.
I have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, but my real passion has always been ESL. From 2006 to 2012, I taught ESL at Nizwa University in Oman, in the Middle East. There, I had the opportunity to experience the Arab culture, and I was involved in many projects including placement testing, writing materials, tutoring, and extra-curricular activities. I have taught ESL from beginners until TOEFL preparation courses and I believe that each age group and each English level has its own challenges and rewards.
Now, after I get my Post-graduate degree in English and Teaching Methodology, I know that a window of opportunities will unfold before me, and I will be able to explore different paths in my career. So, I can keep doing what I was born to do: TEACH. I usually say that teaching is not what I do (for a leaving), but it is who I am (as a person-in my core).
